Field Hockey Rallies for Overtime Win at STAC, 5-4

Sparkill, N.Y. – The field hockey team picked up a thrilling 5-4 overtime victory over the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College at Spartan Field. The victory sets the Lions at 3-2 on the season while STAC falls to 2-5 with the loss.
 
How it Happened
  • The Spartans got on the board in just the second minute of play on a goal from Jacqueline Dowling.
  • Molloy evened the score in the 16th minute as redshirt senior Zoe Norton fed a ball to freshman Kyra Dalli.
  • STAC ended the half on back-to-back goals from Briannah Thorne to go in front, 3-1.
  • The maroon and white cut the deficit to one goal in the 43rd minute off the stick of senior Lauren Keller, assisted by sophomore Nadia Elcock.
  • Kaitlyn Gutenberger gave the Spartans a two-goal lead in the 49th minute.
  • Elcock picked up her second assist of the afternoon on a goal from Norton in the 52nd minute to bring Molloy back within one.
  • The captain tied the contest, 4-4, with just two seconds remaining on the board to force an overtime period.
  • The Spartans were held shotless in the extra frame before Elcock buried a pass from Norton to break the knot and seal the victory.
Top Performances
  • Norton ended the contest with six points on two goals and two assists, also leading the team with five shots.
  • Elcock tallied four points on one goal and two assists, taking five shots.
  • Senior goalkeeper Tara Byrnes made seven saves.
 
Coach's Comments
"We spoke at halftime after a flat start and came back out with the fire that we needed," explained head coach Trish Bonagura. "We fought play after play and never gave up which allowed us to come out on top."
 
Looking Ahead
The maroon and white return home on Saturday (Sept. 15) as the team hosts the University of New Haven at Cedar Creek Park at 1:00 p.m.
