Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. (Apr. 8, 2018) – The Molloy baseball team topped the Mercy Mavericks, 11-6, Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Lions improved to 18-13 overall and 11-0 in ECC play with the win. Freshman
Matt Overton tallied two hits and two RBIs, and junior
Nick Marino recorded a hit and drove in two runs.
The Lions plated three runs in the second inning. Junior
Michael Wall walked with the bases loaded to open the scoring. Sophomore
James Messina hit an RBI single to increase the lead to 2-0. Senior
Jack McCarty grounded into a fielder's choice, which scored Marino and made it 3-0.
In the third, Marino drilled a two-RBI triple to center field to extend the lead to 5-0.
Senior
Angelo Navetta hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the fourth.
Mercy (12-18, 3-5 ECC) scored in the fourth to cut the advantage to 6-1.
The Lions tallied three runs in the sixth on RBI singles from sophomore
Jake Saltzman and Overton and a sacrifice fly from senior
Elijah Leerdam to make it 9-1.
After the Mavericks scored in the bottom of the sixth, Overton and freshman
Jake McCarthy recorded RBIs in the eighth to bring the lead to 11-2.
Sophomore
Anthony Vano threw seven innings, gave up two runs on six hits, and struck out 11 to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Molloy travels to play Caldwell Tuesday, Apr. 10. First pitch with the Cougars is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
