Uniondale, N.Y. (Apr. 7, 2018) – The Molloy baseball team swept a doubleheader with the Mercy Mavericks Saturday afternoon at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex. The Lions won the first game 7-2 and the second game 14-3. The maroon and white improved to 17-13 overall and 10-0 in league play.
Game One: Molloy 7, Mercy 2
Sophomore
Sean Hogan led the Lions with four hits, two runs scored, and one RBI in the first game.
The Lions jumped ahead in the bottom of the first. Junior
David Lim hit an RBI single to right field to open the scoring. Hogan increased the lead to 2-0 with an infield single, which scored freshman
Matt Overton.
Molloy extended its lead in the third. Overton drilled an RBI triple to center field and scored on a throwing error, which put the maroon and white up 4-0.
Mercy (12-17, 3-4 ECC) scored in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-1.
In the bottom half of the frame, junior
Michael Wall hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1. Sophomore
James Messina brought home senior
Elijah Leerdam with a sacrifice bunt.
Wall added an RBI double in the seventh, which made it a 7-1 game.
Senior
Kevin Hiss threw eight innings, gave up one run on five hits, and struck out seven to improve to 6-1 on the season.
Game Two: Molloy 14, Mercy 3
Senior
Angelo Navetta tallied two hits and drove in five runs, and senior
Elijah Leerdam collected two hits and three RBIs in the second game.
Mercy scored two runs in the first and one in the second to take an early 3-0 lead.
Junior
Ryan Hensley hit an RBI single in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 3-1.
In the third, Navetta and Leerdam hit two-run home runs to put the Lions ahead 5-3.
Molloy plated four runs in the fourth to bring its lead to 9-3. Senior
Jack McCarty drove in Hensley with an RBI single. Navetta drove in McCarty with a sacrifice fly. Sophomore
Jake Saltzman scored on a passed ball, and Leerdam drilled an RBI double.
In the fifth, sophomore
Matthew Imbrogno hit an RBI single to center, and Navetta blasted a ground-rule double to right center to make it a 12-3 contest.
Junior
Nick Marino added a two-run home run in the sixth.
Junior
James Murphy threw two shutout innings to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Molloy travels to Mercy to conclude its series tomorrow at noon.
