Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. (April 6, 2018) – The Molloy baseball team scored five runs in the eighth inning on its way to a 9-6 victory over the Mercy Mavericks Friday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Lions improved to 15-13 overall and 8-0 in league play with the win. Senior
Angelo Navetta tallied two hits and three RBIs, sophomore
Sean Hogan collected four hits and drove in two runs, and freshman
Matt Overton recorded three hits and two RBIs.
The Lions opened the scoring in the top the of third. Senior
Jack McCarty hit a sacrifice to left field, which scored junior
Michael Wall and put the maroon and white ahead 1-0.
In the bottom half of the frame, Mercy tallied two runs to take a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth, Navetta tied the score, 2-2, with an RBI single to right field.
The Mavericks plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 4-2.
Molloy tied the game in the top of the seventh. Overton drilled an RBI double down the left field line to cut the lead to 4-3. Then, Hogan hit an RBI single to right to knot the score, 4-4.
The home team scored two runs in the bottom of the stanza to go ahead 6-4.
The maroon and white used a five-run eighth inning to take the lead. Navetta tied the game with a two-run triple to left center. Overton drove in Navetta with a single to left field, which put the Lions ahead 7-6. Hogan blasted an RBI double to left to increase the lead to 8-6. Junior
Nick Marino capped the rally with an RBI single to left to make it a 9-6 contest.
Junior
Lucas Burton threw an inning in relief to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Senior
Shawn Klotsche pitched two innings and struck out one batter to record his fifth save of the year.
Molloy and Mercy continue its series tomorrow, Apr. 7 at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
