Brianna Dalton and
Bernadette Mullane each hit home runs in a split against the University of Bridgeport for the softball team. On the evening, Dalton led the offense with a combined four RBI, going 4-of-6. The Lions now sit at 18-12 on the season and 6-2 in East Coast Conference play.
Game One: Molloy 2, UB 5
The maroon and white fell behind early after the Purple Knights took a 2-0 lead on a wild pitch and RBI single. The visitors extended the lead to 5-0 after a three-run fourth inning following an RBI single, a stolen base, and an RBI double.
Molloy, who was held to five hits in the contest, got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single from freshman
Courtney Greene. Dalton led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run over the left centerfield wall to bring the Lions within three, 5-2. Senior
Olivia Banulski singled in the home half of the seventh inning, but the maroon and white were unable to plate any additional runs.
Dalton went 2-for-2 with a double and a home run. Junior
Kaitlyn Snyder drew three walks, going 1-for-1 with a stolen base in the effort. Junior
Jenna Turato allowed two runs on one hit, striking out two to fall to 10-6 on the season.
Game Two: Molloy 8, UB 3
The Lions attacked early in the second game, plating five runs in the first inning. Snyder led off with a double down the left field line while Banulski drew a walk. Greene legged out a single to the catcher to load the bases. Dalton drove in Snyder and Banulski with a single to left field before a three-run home run from Mullane gave Molloy the 5-0 advantage.
UB cut the deficit to four runs in the top of the second, scoring on a single down the right field line. Molloy drove in two more runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run double from senior
Sarah Rambo to take a 7-1 lead.
In the third inning, a sacrifice fly and RBI single brought the Purple Knights back within four, 7-3, before freshman
Jackie Rodriguez scored following an error by UB to make it 8-3 in favor of the home team.
Freshman
Tonianne Larson struck out three batters in 4.1 innings of work to improve to 5-3 on the season. Snyder, Greene, Dalton, and Mullane each tallied two hits for Molloy, with Mullane driving in a game-high three runs.
The Lions return to action at home on Sunday (Apr. 8) as they face Saint Thomas Aquinas College at 12:00 p.m. Molloy will be holding its annual Strike Out Cancer Day to benefit alumna Lisa Nappi, who is currently fighting cancer.
