Baseball Falls to STAC

Pomona, N.Y. (Apr. 21, 2018) – The Molloy baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans  Saturday afternoon at Palisades Credit Union Park. The Lions lost the first game 6-4 and the second game 6-5. The maroon and white moved to 23-17 overall and 15-4 in ECC play.

Game One: Molloy 4, St. Thomas Aquinas 6

Senior Angelo Navetta tallied four hits and drove in two runs in the first game.

St. Thomas Aquinas (27-9, 13-2 ECC) scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore Sean Hogan hit a sacrifice fly to center field, which scored Navetta and cut the home team's lead to 2-1 in the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Spartans plated three runs to increase their advantage to 5-1.

Molloy tallied three runs in the fifth to shrink the lead to 5-4. Navetta drilled a two-run single to right to make it a 5-3 contest, and with the bases loaded, senior Elijah Leerdam walked to make it a one-run game, 5-4.

STAC added one run in the seventh.

Game Two: Molloy 5, St. Thomas Aquinas 6

Senior Jack McCarty scored two runs, tallied one hit, and one RBI, and Leerdam scored a run, collected one hit, and drove in one run in the second game.

The Lions jumped ahead in the top of the second. Junior Michael Wall drilled an RBI double to left center to make it 1-0.

STAC plated six runs in the bottom of the frame to go ahead 6-1.

Molloy used a four-run sixth to make it a one-run game. Leerdam started the rally with an RBI single, which scored Navetta. McCarty then collected an RBI single, and Leerdam and McCarty both scored on a wild pitch and throwing error, which cut the lead to 6-5.

The Lions and Spartans conclude their series tomorrow, Apr. 22 at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
