Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Apr. 19, 2018) - The softball team fell in a doubleheader against the Knights of Queens College at Bob Klein Field. The losses set the Lions at 25-17 on the season and 13-7 in East Coast Conference play.
Game One: Molloy 0, Queens 3
In a slow start, Molloy was held to just one hit, coming in the first inning on a single from senior Brianna Dalton.Â
The Knights plated three runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single, a ground out, and an RBI double.Â
The Lions' best scoring chance came in the sixth inning after a walk to junior Kaitlyn Snyder and senior Olivia Banulski reaching on an error. Both runners advanced to scoring position following a ground out by freshman Courtney Greene, but Queens kept the visitors off the scoreboard.Â
Freshman Tonianne Larson went 3.2 innings, striking out four batters, in the loss.Â
Game Two: Molloy 3, Queens 4
Molloy struck first, scoring in the top of the second on a ground out from junior Tara Byrnes. The Lions plated two more runs in the third inning, taking a 3-0 lead as Dalton drove in Greene and Banulski on a double to right centerfield.Â
Queens cut the deficit to two runs in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a sacrifice bunt.Â
The Knights knotted the score in the bottom of the sixth inning on a triple and sacrifice fly.Â
Molloy loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but was unable to bring home a run, forcing extra innings.Â
The Lions threatened to extend the game again in the top of the ninth as a wild pitch put runners on second and third, but Queens ultimately took the doubleheader on an RBI single through the right side in the bottom half of the inning.
Junior Jenna Turato tossed 8.2 innings in the loss, striking out five batters.
The maroon and white step out of league play this weekend as they head to Caldwell University on Sunday (Apr. 22). First pitch against the Cougars is slated for 12:00 p.m.
