Softball Takes Series Sweep of NYIT with Pair of Wins

Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Apr. 15, 2018) - The softball team completed the season sweep of New York Institute of Technology, taking both halves of a doubleheader today at Bob Klein Field, 3-0 and 4-2. With the victories, the Lions improve to 24-14 on the season and 12-4 in East Coast Conference play.

Game One: Molloy 3, NYIT 0
After three and a half scoreless innings, seniors Brianna Dalton and Chrissy Heyer singled to set the table for a three-run blast from senior Alexandra Russo, her second of the season with both coming against the Bears.

Freshman Tonianne Larson tossed a complete game shutout, allowing six hits while striking out a career-high seven batters.

Game Two: Molloy 4, NYIT 2

The Bears struck first in the second game, taking a 1-0 lead after two innings of play on a ground out from Jessica Daniel.

The maroon and white responded in the bottom of the third, plating four runs. Junior Tara Byrnes and freshman Sarah Glaser singled to start off the inning before junior Kaitlyn Snyder tied the game with a single. Back-to-back doubles from senior Sarah Rambo and Dalton gave the Lions a 4-1 lead.

NYIT cut the deficit in half in the sixth on a ground out from Lizul Portugal, but junior Jenna Turato and the Molloy defense stood strong and stopped the Bears from any additional damage.

In the effort, Turato tossed 5.2 innings for her 14th victory of the season.

The Lions return to action on Tuesday (Apr. 17) as they head to Bridgeport, Conn. in a doubleheader against the University of Bridgeport. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
