Baseball Splits Doubleheader with NYIT

Old Westbury, N.Y. (Apr. 14, 2018) – The Molloy baseball team split a doubleheader with the NYIT Bears Saturday at Angelo Lorenzo Field. The Lions lost the first game 1-0 and won the second game 9-2. The maroon and white moved to 22-14 overall and 14-1 in ECC play.

Game One: Molloy 0, NYIT 1

Senior Angelo Navetta tallied three hits in the first game.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the ninth. The Bears tallied a run in the final frame to pick up the 1-0 win.

Senior Kevin Hiss threw 8.2 innings, allowed one run on five hits, and struck out six.

Game Two: Molloy 9, NYIT 2

Sophomore Jake Saltzman and senior Elijah Leerdam tallied two hits and two RBIs in the second game.

Freshman Matt Overton opened the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run to left field.

The Lions added to their lead in the fourth. Sophomore Sean Hogan scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Saltzman hit a two-RBI single to increase the lead to 4-0.

The Bears scored in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-1.

The maroon and white plated three runs in the fifth. Leerdam and junior Nick Marino registered RBI singles, and Leerdam scored on a wild pitch to extend the advantage to 7-1.

In the sixth, Hogan drilled an RBI single to right center, and Leerdam grounded to short, which scored Overton and brought the lead to 9-1.

The Bears scored in the bottom of the sixth.

Sophomore Anthony Vano pitched a complete game, gave up two runs on seven hits, and struck out seven to improve to 4-1 on the season. 

Molloy hosts NYIT in the series finale tomorrow at the Mitchel Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
