Baseball Tops Queens, 6-3

Uniondale, N.Y. (Apr. 11, 2018) – The Molloy baseball team topped the Queens Knights, 6-3, Wednesday afternoon at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex.  The Lions improved to 20-13 overall and 12-0 in ECC play. Senior Angelo Navetta tallied two hits and two RBIs, and freshman Matt Overton collected three hits and drove in a run.

Queens (9-18, 1-10 ECC) opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning.

The Lions went ahead in the sixth with a three-run frame. With runners on first and third, Overton hit a single through the right side to cut the lead to 2-1. Later in the frame, Navetta scored on a wild pitch to tie the score. Sophomore Sean Hogan drove in Overton with a sacrifice fly to center to put the maroon and white ahead 3-2.

The Knights tied the score, 3-3, in the top of the seven.

In the eighth, senior Elijah Leerdam walked with the bases loaded to put the home team ahead 4-3, and Navetta drilled a two-run triple to right field, which set the Molloy all-time record for triples (14) and increased the lead to 6-3.

Redshirt junior Matt Brembs threw an inning of relief to pick up his first win with the Lions.

Senior Shawn Klotsche retired the side in order in the ninth to record his sixth save of the season.

Molloy returns to action Friday, Apr. 13 when it hosts NYIT. The game with the Bears is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
