Baseball Sweeps Bridgeport

Uniondale, N.Y. (Mar. 25, 2018) – The Molloy baseball team swept a doubleheader with the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights Sunday afternoon at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex. The Lions won the first game 2-0 and the second game 5-2. The maroon and white improved to 11-11 overall and 4-0 in East Coast Conference play and have won five consecutive games.

Game One: Molloy 2, Bridgeport 0

Freshman Matt Overton led the Lions with two hits in the first game.

Molloy jumped ahead 1-0 in the third inning. With runners on first and third, senior Angelo Navetta was caught stealing, and sophomore Jake Saltzman scored on the throw to second.

The maroon and white extended its lead in the sixth. Sophomore Sean Hogan hit an RBI single to center to make it 2-0.

Senior Kevin Hiss threw a complete game shutout, allowing six hits and striking out six batters, to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Game Two: Molloy 5, Bridgeport 2

Bridgeport (3-19, 0-4 ECC) opened the scoring in the first inning and took a 1-0 lead.

Molloy tied the score in the fourth on an RBI single from junior Nick Marino.

The Purple Knights went ahead 2-1 in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom half of the frame, Saltzman hit a sacrifice fly to center field, which scored senior Ryan Hensley.

The maroon and white plated three runs in the seventh to go ahead 5-2. Senior Elijah Leerdam hit an RBI single to make it 3-2. Saltzman scored on a wild pitch, and Overton hit an RBI single to extend the lead.

Senior Jack McCarty, Leerdam, Hogan, and Hensley collected two hits apiece.

Sophomore Anthony Vano pitched seven innings, gave up two runs on four hits, and struck out three to move to 2-0 on the season.

Senior Shawn Klotsche retired the side in order in the ninth to record his third save of the season.

The Lions host East Stroudsburg Wednesday, Mar. 28. First pitch with the Warriors is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
