Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Mar. 18, 2018) – The Molloy softball team swept Holy Family University in a Sunday doubleheader at Bob Klein Field. The maroon and white improve to 11-9 on the season with the victories while the Tigers still search for their first win of the season. Seniors
Brianna Dalton and
Olivia Banulski each recorded three hits on the afternoon.
Molloy will return to action on Thursday (Mar. 22) in a home doubleheader against Jefferson University at 3:30 p.m.
Game One: Molloy 5, Holy Family 4
Junior
Kaitlyn Snyder started the first inning off for the Lions with a walk. Senior
Sarah Rambo placed a double to center field to give Molloy a 1-0 lead. The maroon and white added two additional runs in the second inning, on RBI singles from senior
Bernadette Mullane and freshman
Courtney Greene.
The Tigers, however, tied the contest in the top of the third inning with a three-run home run.
Molloy quickly broke the knot in the bottom half of the inning, as freshman
Sarah Glaser singled through the right side to score senior
Chrissy Heyer.
Banulski added an additional insurance run in the fourth inning with a single to center field.
Holy Family would come within one in the sixth on an RBI double, but freshman
Tonianne Larson retired the Tigers in the seventh to earn her fourth win of the season. Senior
Jenna Turato fanned two batters, allowing only three hits though three innings in a no decision.
Greene and Banulski each recorded two hits for the maroon and white, with the senior going 2-for-2 in the effort.
Game Two: Molloy 4, Holy Family 1
After four scoreless innings, Holy Family struck first blood with a solo home run to left field in the top of the fifth.
The Lions quickly knotted the score in the bottom half of the inning, as walks to Snyder and senior
Alex Russo paired with a double from Dalton set up an RBI single for Banulski.
In the bottom of the sixth, Heyer singled to left before stealing second and then advancing to third base on a ground out by Russo. A single to right from Dalton brought in the left fielder, giving Molloy the one-run, 2-1, advantage. After a single from
Tara Byrnes,
the Lions had runners on second and third for Glaser, who placed a single to left field to score Dalton. Byrnes scored on a wild pitch to give the Lions a 4-1 lead headed to the final inning of play.
The Tigers would come within two, 4-2, in the top of the seventh but the Molloy defense held on for the victory.
Turato improved to 5-5 on the season in the complete game effort. Dalton went 2-for-3 for the maroon and white.
