Softball Splits Home Opener Against #24 Merrimack College

Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Mar. 17, 2018) – The Molloy softball team split a doubleheader against #24 ranked Merrimack College (12-2) in the team's home opener. The Lions improve to 9-9 after the performance.

Game One: Molloy 2, Merrimack 5
Through three innings, the teams combined for just three hits with the scored tied 0-0. The Warriors struck first on a solo home run by Kristina Terrazzano.

Molloy would come close to tying the contest in the fifth inning, after three straight singles from senior Bernadette Mullane, freshman Sarah Glaser, and junior Kaitlyn Snyder loaded the bases with just one out. The maroon and white were unable to bring home the run.

The top of the seventh brought four runs home for the Warriors. Two scored following an error by the Lions before an RBI single from Hannah Johnson put Merrimack in front, 4-0. One additional run would score as a result of an error to put the Warriors up by five.

Freshman Courtney Greene brought Molloy within three with a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh, but the comeback would fall short.

Snyder led the offense, going 2-of-4 at the plate while Greene drove in the only runs.

Junior Jenna Turato fell to 4-5 with the loss, striking out two through 6.2 innings.

Game Two: Molloy 4, Merrimack 2
The Lions took a 3-0 lead after two innings of play on singles from seniors Chrissy Heyer and Brianna Dalton and Glaser.

An error put the Warriors on the board in the third inning, but Molloy quickly added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from junior Tara Byrnes.

Merrimack brought in a run with a single in the top of the seventh inning, but freshman Tonianne Larson was able to pitch out of the jam, earning her third win of the season. The rookie tossed a complete-game, fanning four batters. Heyer went 2-of-3 with a stolen base with Dalton, Byrnes, and Glaser each picking up RBIs.

The maroon and white return to action tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. The Lions will be taking on the Tigers of Holy Family University. The contest, originally scheduled to be played on the road, will take place at Bob Klein Field.
