Clermont, Fla. (Mar. 11, 2018) – The Molloy softball team split a doubleheader against Stonehill College in the team's second day at the PFX Spring Games, played at Sleepy Hollow Fields. The Lions sit at 6-4 on the season and 2-2 on the trip.
Game One: Molloy 1, Stonehill 3
The Skyhawks took an early lead in the home half of the first inning on an RBI double Caroline Casey and a two-run home run from Michelle Theilgard.
In the top of the third, junior
Kaitlyn Snyder reached base with a double to right center field before senior
Olivia Banulski drove her in with a double to left center field to bring the Lions within two, 3-1.
Despite having runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings, Molloy was unable to bring in a run, falling 3-1 to Stonehill.
Banulski led, going 3-for-4 at the plate with the lone RBI for the Lions. Freshman
Tonianne Larson fell to 0-1 on the season.
Game Two: Molloy 6, Stonehill 5
The offense got off to an early start in the second half of the doubleheader. Snyder and Banulski each singled to start the game before a single from freshman
Courtney Greene gave Molloy a 2-0 lead. Senior
Alexandra Russo doubled the lead to 4-0 with a single to right field, scoring Greene and senior
Sarah Rambo.
Stonehill tied the contest in the third inning following a fielding error and a three-run triple.
After an inning and a half of nearly perfect play by both teams, Greene broke the knot with a single through the right side to score Snyder. Rambo followed with an RBI single of her own, scoring sophomore
Mikaela Tribby, to make it 6-4 after five innings of play.
Theilgard sent the ball over the fence in the sixth inning to bring the Skyhawks within one. With the tying run on second, junior
Jenna Turato forced three straight outs to work out of the jam. The Stonehill batters were retired in order in the seventh inning, giving the Lions the 6-5 victory.
Greene tossed three innings, striking out three batters to improve to 2-2 on the season with the win while Turato allowed one hit through four innings pitched, striking out three to pick up her first save of the campaign.
Snyder, Banulski, and Greene each recorded multiple hits for the maroon and white, with Greene leading with three RBIs.
Molloy returns to action tomorrow (Mar. 12) in a doubleheader against West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Game one is set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
