Brookville, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2018) – The Molloy women's basketball team fell to the LIU Post Pioneers, 60-55, Wednesday evening at the Pratt Recreation Center. The Lions moved to 8-15 overall and 3-10 in East Coast Conference play. Junior
Ihnacinse Grady tallied a team-high 15 points, and freshman
Marthe Guirand recorded a double-double (11 points and 12 rebounds).
The Lions jumped out to a 6-2 lead on jump shots from freshmen
Gabriella Aspuru (four points), Guirand, and
Melody Prichard (eight points). LIU Post (17-6, 12-1 ECC) tallied the next four points to knot the score at six. Freshman
Abigail Duvivier (four points) converted a three-point play to put Molloy ahead 9-6. With the Pioneers up 11-10, Prichard made a jumper to give the maroon and white a 12-11 advantage at the end of the first frame.
The Pioneers scored five straight points to start the second stanza and took a 16-12 lead. Guirand tallied five of the game's next eight points to cut the home team's advantage to 19-17. Post ended the quarter on an 11-2 rally and led 30-19 at the break.
The home team opened the second half on a 9-2 run to increase its lead to 39-21. The Pioneers led 48-32 at the end of 30 minutes of play.
The Lions opened the fourth quarter on a 12-5 rally, led by six points from sophomore
Kathryn Gibson (11 points) and five points from Grady, to cut the Pioneers' lead to 53-44.With the score 56-44, the maroon and white went on an 8-0 run, led by six points from Grady, to make it a 56-52 contest with 2:09 left. But the away team's comeback try came up short.
Molloy returns to action Saturday, Feb. 7, when it hosts NYIT at Quealy Gymnasium. Tip-off with the Bears is scheduled for noon.
