Flushing, N.Y. (Feb. 3, 2018) – The Molloy women's basketball team was defeated by the Queens College Knights, 75-60, Saturday afternoon at Fitzgerald Gymnasium. The Lions moved to 8-14 overall and 3-9 in ECC play with the loss. Sophomore
Kathryn Gibson netted a team-high 16 points, and junior
Gabriella Aspuru tallied a double-double (14 points and 12 rebounds) for the maroon and white.
The Lions jumped out to an early 6-3 advantage, led by four points from freshman
Marthe Guirand (10 points). Queens (10-10, 6-6 ECC) answered with an 11-2 rally to go ahead 14-10. With the score 16-14, the home team went on a 9-0 run and led 25-14 after the first quarter.
The Knights extended their lead to 32-16 with 5:23 left in the half. With the score 35-19, freshman
Abigail Duvivier (two points) made a layup and Gibson hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 35-24. Later in the frame, junior
Ihnacinse Grady (14 points) made a triple to cut Queens' lead to 37-27. The home team led 42-33 at the break.
The maroon and white shrunk the Knights' advantage to five, 42-37, on back-to-back baskets from Guirand and Grady. Queens responded with a 13-0 run to bring the lead to 55-37 and led 63-43 at the end of 30 minutes of play.
The Lions cut Queens' lead to 12 in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as they would get in the 75-60 loss.
Molloy returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 7, when it heads to play LIU Post. Tip-off with the Pioneers is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
