Rochester, N.Y. (Feb. 17, 2018) - The Molloy women's basketball team was defeated by the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks, 66-57, Saturday afternoon at the Voller Athletic Center. The Lions moved to 8-18 overall and 3-13 in ECC play with the loss. Freshman
Melody Prichard netted a team-high 22 points, and sophomore
Kathryn Gibson tallied nine points.
The maroon and white scored the first eight points of the contest, led by a pair of three-pointers from Prichard. With the score 12-4, Roberts Wesleyan (18-8, 12-4 ECC) registered the next four points to cut the Lions' lead to 12-8. Prichard, who shot 6-of-12 from downtown, hit another triple to bring Molloy's lead to 15-8, and the visitors led 15-9 at the end of the first frame.
With the score 17-10, the Redhawks went on a 10-3 run to even the score at 20. Gibson hit a three to put the Lions up 23-20. With the home team ahead 24-23, junior
Ihnacinse Grady (eight points) made a jumper to put Molloy back ahead 25-24. Roberts Wesleyan scored the next five points to take a 30-25 advantage. Prichard hit a triple to trim the lead to 30-28. The Redhawks led 34-31 at the break.
Roberts opened a 36-31 lead to begin the third quarter. Gibson and Prichard hit back-to-back threes to put Molloy up 37-36. With the contest tied at 41, freshman
Marthe Guirand (eight points) made a layup to put the maroon and white ahead 43-41. The game was tied at 43 after 30 minutes of play.
The Redhawks scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to take a 47-43 lead with 9:05 left. Down 51-48, freshman
Gabriella Aspuru (seven points) made a layup to shrink the lead to 51-50. The home team tallied the next six points to bring its lead to 57-50. Guirand scored to cut the lead to 62-57 with 50 seconds left, but that was as close as the Lions would get.
Molloy returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 21, when it travels to play the University of Bridgeport. Tip-off with the Purple Knights is slated for 5:00 p.m.
