Nick Corbett sunk a layup in the final second of play to seal a victory for the men's basketball team, 80-78, over Roberts Wesleyan College. The Lions improve to 7-19 (6-10 East Coast Conference) with the victory, while the loss drops Roberts Wesleyan to 14-11 (7-9 ECC).
The Redhawks started off strong, leading 9-4 following the first four minutes of action. Molloy took its first lead with 10:32 left in the first half on a layup from redshirt freshman
Justin Caldwell. The home team, however, countered with a 10-2 run to take a 24-17 lead with 7:30 on the clock. The Lions tied the contest again with 4:15 remaining in the half, but Roberts Wesleyan ultimately took a two-point lead, 34-32, into the break.
A 15-4 run early in the second half helped Molloy to a 47-40 lead before eventually leading by as much as 14 points, 64-50, with 6:52 left to play. In the final minute, the Redhawks, led by 14 second half points from Peyton McLaurin, cut the deficit to just two points, 73-71. A layup from Corbett paired with three made free throws from sophomore
Josh Dennis gave the Lions a five-point lead with 20 seconds on the clock. Roberts Wesleyan scored five points to tie the game with three seconds left on the clock before Corbett's heroic shot sealed the victory for the visitors.
Corbett led all scorers with 29 points (10-of-21) while adding eight rebounds, seven assists, and two steals. Junior
Curtis Jenkins tallied 15 points and added 11 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. Dennis and Caldwell each finished in double digits for Molloy, scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Lions will face the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday (Feb. 21) at 7:00 p.m.
