Mike Torre scored a career-high 30 points, shooting 12-of-16 from the field, in an 86-73 victory over New York Institute of Technology for men's basketball. Fellow junior
Curtis Jenkins netted 23 points (8-of-13), scoring the guard's 1,000 career point as a member of the maroon and white. Molloy improves to 6-18 on the season and 5-9 in East Coast Conference play, moving to sixth-place with four games left to play.
The Lions struck first on a layup and foul shot from Jenkins before NYIT (3-23, 1-13 ECC) took its largest lead of the day, 8-5. The home team went on a 13-0 run, fueled by 11 points from Torre, to take a double-digit lead, 18-8, midway through the first half. The Bears came within five, 24-19, with just under eight minutes in the frame, but Molloy kept its foot on the gas and took as much as a 14-point lead, 35-21. The Lions went into the break in front, 36-28.
A triple early in the second brought NYIT back within reach, 49-44, but a 10-3 run, featuring six points from sophomore
Nolan Kelly, kept the home team in front, 59-47. The Bears made a final push, coming back within five points, 63-58, with 8:01 on the clock. Molloy went on a 12-8 run in the final three minutes to seal the victory, 86-73.
Torre added a team-leading six rebounds while chipping in with two steals, one assist, and one block. Jenkins tallied five assists, five boards, and a game-high three steals. Sophomore
Nick Corbett reached double-digits with 10 points while adding four helpers, four boards and two steals. Kelly pulled down six rebounds to go with six points. Junior
Derrick Okunpolor also nabbed a game-high three steals, adding six points.
Molloy begins a three-game road series on Friday (Feb. 16) against Daemen College at 8:00 p.m.
