Women's Basketball Rallies to Defeat Mercy

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy women's basketball team defeated the Mercy Mavericks, 60-55, Wednesday evening at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improved to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in ECC play. The Mavericks fell to 3-8 overall and 0-4 in league play.

How it Happened
  • Mercy jumped out to an early 15-6 lead.
  • The Lions went on an 11-0 run, led by three points from sophomore Kathryn Gibson, to take a 17-15 advantage.
  • Mercy led 19-17 at the end of the first quarter.
  • With the score knotted at 21, Molloy went on an 8-0 run, led by four points from junior Jenna Silletti, to go ahead 29-21.
  • The Lions led 33-25 at the break.
  • Silletti made a layup with 6:46 left in the third frame to put the maroon and white up 39-27.
  • With the score 41-30, the Mavericks scored eight straight points to cut Molloy's lead to 41-38.
  • The Lions led 48-44 after 30 minutes of play.
  • The away team scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter and took a 51-48 lead.
  • Down 55-50, Molloy closed the game on a 10-0 rally, led by five points from senior Ihnacinse Grady, to secure a 60-55 victory.
Top Performances
  • Sophomore Marthe Guirand recorded a double-double (11 points and 15 rebounds). The sophomore added three blocks.
  • Grady tallied nine points, eight assists, and five rebounds.
  • Silletti scored a season-high 14 points. The junior added six rebounds, five assists, and four blocks.
  • Redshirt senior Tyra Harrison logged 10 points and seven rebounds.
Coach's Comments
  • "Marthe's toughness and 15 rebounds, along with Jenna's defense and overall play were major factors tonight," head coach Joe Pellicane said. "Ihnacinse's leadership and subtle basketball plays on both ends led Molloy to this team victory."
Looking Ahead
  • The maroon and white travels to play Stonehill Saturday, December 29. Tip-off with the Skyhawks is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
