Byrnes Nets Two in 3-1 Victory for Field Hockey

West Haven, Conn. – Two goals from senior Ellyn Byrnes lifted the field hockey team to a 3-1 lead against the University of New Haven. With the victory, Molloy improved to 11-5 on the season.
 
How it Happened
  • The Lions outshot the Chargers, 7-5, after a scoreless first half of play.
  • New Haven got on the board just 48 seconds into the second half, as Alexis Rider scored from the top of the circle.
  • Redshirt senior Zoe Norton, Byrnes, and freshman Jessica Kleber peppered the Chargers' keeper with shots; with Byrnes eventually scoring off Kleber's rebound to knot the game in the 50th minute.
  • The forward scored again just under two minutes later to put the maroon and white in front, off an assist from Kleber.
  • Norton added an insurance goal on an assist from freshman Shaelin de Wit in the 63rd minute to give Molloy a two-goal lead.
 
Top Performances
  • Norton fired a game-high seven shots, six of which landed on target.
  • Byrnes and sophomore Nadia Elcock each took four.
  • Despite drawing just one penalty corner in the first half, the maroon and white tied the Chargers with eight on the contest and outshot the home team, 20-13.
  • Senior Tara Byrnes made five saves in net.
 
Looking Ahead
Molloy will host Converse College on Sunday (Oct. 28) at 1:00 p.m. at Cedar Creek Park.
