Seaford, N.Y. – The field hockey team fell to the Mavericks of Mercy College, 3-1, this afternoon at Cedar Creek Park. Molloy fell to 9-5 on the season with the loss, and the season series with the Mavericks now sits at 1-1.
How it Happened
- Despite outshooting Mercy, 8-5, in the first half, the Lions went into the break trailing 1-0 after Alicia Williams tipped in a rebound to put the visitors ahead.
- Williams added a second goal seven minutes into the second frame to double the lead.
- The maroon and white turned on the offense, firing off five shots before sophomore Nadia Elcock picked up a loose ball in front of the net and sent it past the goalie's left side to cut the lead in half.
- The momentum turned back in favor of the Mavericks as Mercy regained a two-goal lead in the 61st minute of play.
Top Performances
- Redshirt senior Zoe Norton led the Lions with five shots. Freshman Jessica Kleber tallied three.
- Molloy outshot the Mavericks, 17-6, but Mercy landed seven shots on goal as opposed to Molloy's six.
- The maroon and white maintained a 9-7 advantage on penalty corner opportunities.
- Senior goalkeeper Tara Byrnes made four saves.
Looking Ahead
The Lions welcome the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday (Oct. 20) as part of the College's Family and Alumni Weekend. The team will honor the five members of its senior class in a pre-game ceremony at 12:40 p.m. with the contest slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
