Women's Basketball Slips Against Daemen

Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Jan. 19, 2018) – The Molloy women's basketball team fell to the Daemen Wildcats, 55-50, Friday evening at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions moved to 8-10 overall and 3-5 in East Coast Conference play. Freshman Melody Prichard netted a team-high 17 points, and junior Ihnacinse Grady tallied 12 points in the loss.
 
Daemen (7-11, 4-4 ECC) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. The Lions tied the game with four straight points from Grady. With the score 7-6, the visitors scored the next four points to go ahead 11-6. Grady, who scored each of Molloy's eight points in the opening frame, made a layup to cut the lead to 11-8. The Wildcats led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter.
 
Grady opened the second quarter with a basket to cut Daemen's lead to 13-10. The Wildcats extended their lead to 19-12. The Lions scored the next seven points, led by four points from Prichard, to knot the game at 19. With the score tied at 21, the away team made a three-pointer to bring a 24-21 advantage into the break.
 
Molloy scored six consecutive points to begin the second half to take a 27-24 lead. Later in the frame, the home team went on an 11-2 rally, led by six points from Prichard, to bring its lead to 42-30. Daemen closed the quarter with the final two points, and the maroon and white led 42-32 at the end of 30 minutes of play.
 
Junior Kathryn Gibson (eight points) made a triple to put the Lions' ahead 48-37 with 7:31 left. Daemen answered with a 12-0 run to go ahead 49-48. Freshman Marthe Guirand (six points) made a layup to put the maroon and white up, 50-49, with 1:11 remaining. But Daemen closed the contest with the final six points to secure the victory.
 
Molloy returns to action Sunday, Jan. 21, when it hosts Roberts Wesleyan. Tip-off with the Redhawks is scheduled for noon.
