Women's Basketball Falls to Roberts Wesleyan

Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Jan. 21, 2018) – The Molloy women's basketball team was defeated by the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks, 67-48, Sunday afternoon at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions moved to 8-11 overall and 3-6 in conference play with the loss. Freshman Melody Prichard netted a team-high 13 points, and freshman Gabriella Aspuru tallied 12 points for the maroon and white.

The teams went back and forth in the opening quarter. Roberts Wesleyan (13-6, 7-2 ECC) took an early 5-4 lead. Molloy came back with a three-pointer from Prichard to make it 7-5. The Redhawks scored six straight points to go up 11-7. The Lions tallied back-to-back buckets from sophomore Kathryn Gibson (seven points) and junior Ihnacinse Grady (10 points) to knot the score at 11. With the visitors ahead 16-13, the maroon and white went on a 7-2 rally, led by four points from Prichard, to give the home team a 20-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Redhawks went back up, 23-21, early in the second frame. The away team extended its lead to 30-24. The Lions went on a 9-2 run to take a 33-32 advantage. Roberts added a free throw before the half to make it a 33-33 game at the break.

Prichard made a jumper to put the maroon and white ahead 37-35 with 4:05 left in the third quarter. The Redhawks jumped ahead 38-37, but Molloy answered with a jumper from Gibson to take a 39-38 lead. The away team scored the next six points and led 43-41 after 30 minutes of play.

Molloy tied the contest at 43 after a bucket from Prichard, but Roberts outscored the Lions 24-5 for the rest of the game to secure the victory.

The maroon and white returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 24, when it hosts the University of the District of Columbia. Tip-off with the Firebirds is slated for 5:00 p.m.
