Men's Soccer Defeated by #2 Adelphi

Garden City, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2017) – The Molloy men's soccer team fell, 5-2, to the No. 2 ranked Adelphi Panthers at Motamed Field Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Lions move to 1-2. Junior Daniel Massey (Warrington, England) led the maroon and white with two goals.

Massey put the Lions ahead,1-0, in the fourth minute after he fired a low shot into the back of the net.

Following the tally, Adelphi, which outshot Molloy 14-4 in the first stanza, brought pressure, but couldn't beat junior goalkeeper Raul Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.), who made six saves in the opening half.

The Panthers tied the score in the 51st minute on a goal from Andre De Giorgi (Lisbon, Portuga). Six minutes later, De Giorgi found the back of the net again to put the home team ahead, 2-1.

But the Lions would answer in the 67th minute. On a corner kick, redshirt freshman Anthony Martinico (East Meadow, N.Y.) sent a ball into the box and Massey headed the ball in for his second goal of the match.

The match was delayed 53 minutes due to lightning with 18:32 left.

Following the delay, Adelphi brought pressure in the offensive third, and De Giorgi headed in his third goal of the contest to make it 3-2 in the 76th minute.

The Panthers added insurance markers from Alex Varkatzas (Elmira, N.Y.) and De Giorgi to go up 5-2.

Bonilla finished the match with 13 saves.

Molloy returns to action Saturday, September 9th when it hosts Southern New Hampshire University in its home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
