DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 16, 2017) – Led by two shots on goal from senior
Christina Carbone (East Meadow, N.Y.), the Molloy field hockey team fell to Mercy College, 2-0, at Mercy Field. The loss drops the team to 0-6 on the campaign.
The Mavericks got on the board early, as Angela Robbins scored right side following a cross from Kimberly Sands in the first 90 seconds of the contest. Mercy threatened a second goal in the final two minutes of the half, but junior defender
Ellyn Byrnes (Huntington, N.Y.), last year's NCAA Statistical Champion for defensive saves, stopped the ball from crossing the goal line. Junior goalkeeper
Tara Byrnes (Huntington, N.Y.) made seven saves of her own in the first frame to keep the Mavericks from furthering the lead.
The defensive effort continued through much of the second half, as Mercy took eight shots in the first 30 minutes of the second half. With just over five minutes left to play, Kayly Bryan scored unassisted to double the lead for the home team.
Byrnes made 11 total saves in net in the effort.
The Lions return to the field tomorrow (Sept. 17) as they face No. 1 East Stroudsburg University at Cedar Creek Park at 1:00 p.m.
