Caldwell, N.J. (Sept. 12, 2017) – The Molloy women's soccer team was defeated by the Caldwell Cougars, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at the Caldwell Athletic Fields. The Lions move to 1-3 with the loss.
Caldwell (2-2), which outshot the Lions 10-1 in the opening half, created the majority of chances in the first 45 minutes, but freshman goalkeeper
Jackie Carty (East Islip, N.Y.) made seven stops in the stanza to keep the score even. Molloy's only shot was taken by junior
Katlyn Merino (Corona, N.Y.).
In the second half, the maroon and white took the first four shots, led by two shots from Merino. Following the Lions' chances, the Cougars came back with opportunities of their own, and junior Haley Hopf (Jackson, N.J.) scored in the 67
th minute to put the home team ahead, 1-0.
Down a goal, Molloy, which outshot Caldwell 8-5 in the second half, created chances to tie the score. Freshman
Dana Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.) fired two shots on net that were stopped in the 74
th and 75
th minutes. Poetzsch, who led the Lions with five shots, had another try denied in the 86
th minute.
Carty finished the contest with nine saves.
The Lions open ECC play Saturday, Sept. 16 at Queens. Kickoff against the Knights is slated for noon.
