Baseball Falls to LIU Post, 5-3

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (May 4, 2017) – The Molloy baseball team fell to the LIU Post Pioneers, 5-3, Thursday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions moved to 18-25 overall and 10-12 in the East Coast Conference in the loss.

LIU Post (25-17, 15-7 ECC) opened the scoring in the top of the second. Sophomore Sal Geraci (Bayport, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to put the Pioneers ahead 1-0.

The Lions jumped ahead in the fifth. Senior Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.), who recorded a game-high four hits, singled to center field to score senior Ryan Dillon (Medford, N.Y.). Later in the inning, senior Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) plated Alberghina with a single to left field to put the home team up 2-1.

The Pioneers tied the game in the seventh. Sophomore Anthony Vaglica (Franklin Square, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 2-2.

LIU Post scored three runs in the ninth to take a 5-2 lead.

The Lions scored in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI double from junior Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) to cut the advantage to 5-3, but that was as close as Molloy would get.

Junior Anthony Catinella (Middle Village, N.Y.) threw six innings, gave up two runs, and struck out five, including three in the sixth inning, in the no decision. Senior Dominic Danetti (Wantagh, N.Y.)  moved to 2-5 in the loss.

The Lions continue their series with the Pioneers with a doubleheader Saturday (May 6). The games are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
