RBI Singles from Podell, Saltzman Lead Baseball to 2-1 Victory at Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 5, 2017) – The Molloy baseball team picked up a close 2-1 victory over the Mavericks of Mercy College to improve to 9-16 (4-3 ECC) on the season. Junior Anthony Catinella (Middle Village, N.Y.) picked up the win to move to 2-5 on the season while junior Shawn Klotsche (Wantagh, N.Y.) earned his first save of the season.

The maroon and white struck first in the top of the second innings. Senior Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) got things started with a single to right center field, advancing to second on a ground out from junior Luciano Morello (Hewlett, N.Y.) and to third on a passed ball. A single to left field from freshman Jake Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) gave Molloy the 1-0 lead.

The Lions would double the lead in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Ryan Hensley (Franklin Square, N.Y.) walked before stealing to second. The second baseman scored on a single from senior Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.).

Catinella threw 7.2 innings of shutout baseball before the Mavericks drove in their lone run of the contest on a single from senior Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Klotsche would enter in the ninth innings, retiring the Mavericks in order to clinch the 2-1 victory in favor of Molloy.

Catinella went eight innings, giving up one run on six hits while picking up seven strikeouts. Klotsche picked up two strikeouts in one inning of work for the save. Offensively, Molloy was led by Podell, Alberghina, and Saltzman, who each picked up two hits on the afternoon. Senior Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, totaling 26 on the season to date.

The maroon and white kick off a four-game series with the Knights of Queens College on Friday (Apr. 7) at 3:00 p.m. in Flushing, N.Y.
