Dillon's RBI Double Leads Baseball Past Bridgeport

Uniondale, N.Y. (Apr. 26, 2017) – Senior Ryan Dillon (Medford, N.Y.) laced a go-ahead RBI double to right field to lead the Molloy baseball team to a 3-1 victory over the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights Wednesday afternoon at the Mitchel Athletic Complex. The Lions improved to 17-20 overall and 10-7 in East Coast Conference play.

Bridgeport (15-21, 9-10 ECC) opened the scoring in the top of the first. Senior Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) hit an RBI single to right field to make it 1-0.

Molloy answered in the bottom of the inning. Junior Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.) drove in junior Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.)  with a single to right field to knot the score at one.

The Lions jumped ahead in the second. Dillon, who recorded a team-high two hits, doubled to score freshman Jake Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) and give the maroon and white a 2-1 lead.

The home team added an insurance run in the seventh. Senior Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) double to left field to bring home Navetta, who scored a game-high two runs, to increase the lead to 3-1.

The Purple Knights loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but junior Shawn Klotsche (Wantagh,N.Y.) got senior Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.) to pop out to end the game, to pick up his third save of the season.

Junior Anthony Catinella (Middle Village, N.Y.) threw seven innings, gave up one run on five hits, and struck out six to improve to 4-6 on the season.
