Men's Lacrosse Falls to Mercy in Overtime

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (April 2, 2017) - The Molloy men's lacrosse team was defeated by the Mercy College Mavericks, 10-9, in overtime at Mercy Field Sunday afternoon. The Lions moved to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in East Coast Conference play.

Seniors Jon Camposa (Syosset, N.Y.) and Connor Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) netted two goals each, and junior Casey Kelly (Oceanside, N.Y.) recorded two assists in the loss. Freshman Joe Cortese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) tallied three goals and an assist for Mercy, which improved to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the ECC.

The Mavericks opened the scoring on a goal from graduate student Kevin McNally (Hillburn, N.Y.). The Lions responded with a tally from Camposa to knot the score, 1-1. Mercy then scored the game's next four goals, led by two goals from senior Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y.), to take a 5-1 advantage with 13:44 left in the second quarter.

The maroon and white answered with back-to-back goals from Slane and freshman Travis Cooksey (Wantagh, N.Y.) to cut the lead to 5-3. The home team scored to increase its lead to 6-3 before junior Tim Steinman (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored to make it a 6-4 game at the half.

The Lions began the third quarter with four straight goals, from junior Jaron Greenidge (Flanders, N.Y.), Slane, freshman Colin Kotarski (Rocky Point, N.Y.), and Camposa, to go ahead 8-6.

Mercy then tallied the contest's next three goals, led by two from Cortese, to take a 9-8 lead early in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Michael Scheuerer (Farmingdale, N.Y.) found the back of the cage to tie the score, 9-9, with 5:54 left.

Sophomore Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y.) scored the game-winner in overtime for Mercy.

Senior Rob Steinert (Lynbrook, N.Y.) picked up a team-high six ground balls and caused two turnovers. Junior goalie Ryan Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.) made 13 saves in the loss.

The Lions return home to host Post University Wednesday (Apr. 5). The game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
