Marquardt Scores Program-Record 51 Points in Men's Basketball's Overtime Loss to St. Thomas Aquinas

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Mar. 5, 2017) – Senior Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) scored a program-record 51 points in Molloy's overtime loss to Saint Thomas Aquinas College, 97-86. The guard shot 58 percent from the floor, including 50 percent from three-point range and going 15-of-15 from the charity stripe.

Marquardt got the Lions on the board early, making a three-pointer in the game's first minute of play. The Spartans responded on a 17-6 run to go up 17-9. Molloy would come within two on field goals from sophomore Curtis Jenkins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and senior Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) before STAC would extend their lead to as many as 11 points, 31-20, on a layup from junior Justin Reyes (Haverhill, Mass.). Marquardt would score 11 of the next 12 points to give Molloy a 32-31 lead with 3:04 remaining in the half. Junior James Mitchell (Washington, D.C.) hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the Spartans into the locker room with a 39-38 lead.

Eight points from Reyes, Daniel Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) and Chaz Watler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) extended the Spartans lead to 53-42 in the opening minutes of the second half. The Lions continued chipping away, and a layup from Jenkins brought the maroon and white within six with 9:17 left on the clock. A 9-3 run by STAC pushed the lead back to double-digits, 72-60 with 6:22 to play.

Eight points, including back-to-back three-pointers from Marquardt brought Molloy within four points before another three-pointer from Morris brought the score to 79-78 with 1:49 remaining. Sophomore Mike Torre (Massapequa, N.Y.) went to the line, sinking both of his foul shots, to give the maroon and white their first lead of the second half. Reyes would make a free throw of his own in the final seconds to tie the contest, sending the teams to overtime.

In the extra frame, Marquardt started off the scoring with two made foul shots to put Molloy ahead, but the Spartans exploded on a 12-0 run to go ahead 92-82 with 1:02 left on the clock. The Lions would come as close as eight points in the final minute, but were unable to overcome the Spartans offense. Time would expire with the scoreboard reading 97-86 in favor of STAC, giving the Spartans their second consecutive ECC Championship.

Jenkins was named to the All-Tournament team, scoring 10 points in the effort. Morris totaled 12 points. Marquardt's 51 points earned him the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament.
The maroon and white now await the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Selection Show at 10:30 tonight to learn their fate. For all updates concerning the men's basketball team, check www.molloylions.com.
