Baseball Concludes Lynn Invitational with Loss to Caldwell

BOCA RATON, Fla. (Mar. 14, 2017) – The Molloy baseball team concluded the Lynn Invitational, falling to Caldwell University 12-4. Freshman Jake Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) led offensively, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and one stolen base while senior Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 at the dish, stealing two bases. Senior Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove home the other RBI for the Lions.

The teams remained scoreless through the first three innings until the Cougars struck with a four-run top of the fourth and added two more in the top of the fifth. The Lions responded in the bottom half of the inning, as seniors Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y. and Ryan Dillon (Medford, N.Y.) each singled before Podell was brought home by a single from Saltzman.

Caldwell extended the lead to 8-1 in the sixth on a solo home run, but junior Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off the Molloy half of the inning with a double to right center, scoring on a single from Alberghina to cut the lead to six.

In the bottom of the eighth, the maroon and white were down 9-2 before Saltzman singled to left center to score Dillon and junior Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.). The Cougars put up their final two runs in the top of the ninth to send the game to 12-4.

Junior Anthony Catinella (Middle Village, N.Y.) pitched 4.2 innings, giving up nine hits with one strikeout in the loss while freshman Jack Anderson (Nyack, N.Y.) earned the win for the Cougars.

The Lions are slated for a doubleheader with Stonehill College on Saturday (Mar. 18) beginning at 1:00 p.m.
