SPRINGFIELD, MASS.- Junior
Jessica Markowitz (Baldwin, N.Y.) and sophomore
Brianna Wilson (Levittown, N.Y.) used record-setting performances to lift the Molloy Lions women's lacrosse team to a 19-15 victory over the American International College Yellow Jackets. Markowitz established a single-game program high with nine goals, while Wilson set the record for points in a game with 12 (four goals and eight assists). The Lions moved to 1-0 with the win.
Markowitz started her historic day with the game's first two tallies. Senior
Cooper Sesselman (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), who registered five goals, then scored to give the Lions a 3-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets (0-1) scored four of the game's next five goals to tie the score at four. Markowitz netted her third goal of the day to give the away team a 5-4 edge. The teams traded goals until it was 7-7, Kelsey Daniels (South Windsor, Conn) and Stefanie Dufresne (Belchertown, Mass) recorded back to back goals to give the home team a 9-7 lead. Markowitz found the back of the net, off of a feed from Wilson, to cut the lead to 9-8 at the half.
Molloy scored the first four goals of the second half, led by two goals from Markowitz, and one apiece from Sesselman and Wilson, to go ahead 12-9. AIC responded with a 3-0 rally of its own to knot the score at 12. The teams then exchanged the lead. Down 14-13, the maroon and white went on a 6-0 run, led by three tallies from Wilson, two from Sesselman, and one from Markowitz, on its way to a 19-15 victory.
The Lions kick off their home schedule at the RVC Sports Complex Thursday (Mar.4) against the University of New Haven. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
