Women's Basketball Cruises Past UDC

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2017) – The women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak and inched closer to earning a bye in the East Coast Conference playoffs with a 72-53 victory over the University of the District of Columbia. The Lions improved to 19-8 overall and 11-6 in ECC play with the win.

Leading the way was graduate student Kamala Thompson (Selden, N.Y.), who had 22 points and eight rebounds. Thompson was on fire from behind the arc, hitting a season-high six three-pointers. Sophomore Ihnacinse Grady (Amityville, N.Y.) finished with nine assists and eight rebounds, which were both season-highs. Grady, who just missed a triple-double, added eight points and a team-high four steals. Senior Shantana Kanhoye (South Richmond Hill, N.Y.) chipped in with 11 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.

Molloy trailed by two, 19-17, at the end of the first quarter. The Lions stepped up on defense holding the Firebirds to just five points in the second quarter. Freshman Kathryn Gibson (Neponsit, N.Y.) hit a three late, which gave Molloy a 40-24 lead going into the half. The Lions remained aggressive in the second half and ran away with the game. The maroon and white extended its lead to 25  on a trey by junior Sabrina Rodriguez (Norwalk, Conn.) late in the fourth quarter. Molloy never let UDC back in the game as it cruised to a home victory.

The Lions next game will be this Saturday (Feb. 25), their regular season finale and senior day, as they take on the LIU Post Pioneers. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Quealy Gymnasium.
