McDonald Earns Double-Double in Loss to No. 21 Queens, 73-58

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 1, 2017) – Despite 22 points and 11 rebounds from senior Aliyah McDonald (Hempstead, N.Y.), Molloy's women's basketball team was unable to overcome the Knights of Queens College, falling 73-58. The loss is the team's first of the 2017 calendar year and breaks a streak of nine consecutive wins since Dec. 17. The Lions fell to 17-5 on the season and 9-3 in East Coast Conference play while Queens improved to 19-3 (12-1 ECC).

McDonald's 22 points came after going 10-of-20 (50%) from the field.  The guard also added three assists and a steal on the day. Sophomore Ihnacinse Grady (Amityville, N.Y.) totaled 12 points, while graduate student Kamala Thompson (Selden, N.Y.) put up 11 in the loss.

The first quarter belonged to the maroon and white, as an 8-0 run put Molloy ahead 12-4. The quarter ended with sophomore McKayla Hernandez (Windermere, Fla.) and McDonald sinking field goals, sending the score to 16-6. In the second, however, the Knights exploded to a 12-0 run to come within one point, 24-23. The teams would each exchange blows for the remaining five minutes, until a pair of made foul shots from Beth Bonin (Cicero, N.Y.) pushed Queens in from 31-30 headed into halftime.

The Knights opened the second half on a 12-6 run, but a layup from McDonald brought the Lions back within five points. Madison Rowland (Albany, N.Y.) put up three points in the final seconds to set the score at 46-38 headed into the final frame. The maroon and white put up an impressive 20 points in the fourth quarter, but the Knights exploded with 27 of their own to earn the 73-58 win.
