Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Dec. 31, 2017) – The Molloy women's basketball team was defeated by the Assumption Greyhounds, 56-50, Sunday afternoon at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions moved to 6-7 overall with the loss. Freshman
Melody Prichard netted a team-high 12 points, and freshman
Gabriella Aspuru tallied 11 points.
Assumption (3-8) opened the contest on a 12-1 run. Molloy responded with an 11-3 rally, led by six points from junior
Ihnacinse Grady (six points) and five points from junior
McKayla Hernandez (seven points), to cut the away team's lead to 15-12. The Greyhounds added a point before the end of the frame and led 16-12 after 10 minutes of play.
Prichard put the home team ahead 18-16 with 7:59 left in the first half. Assumption then went on an 8-0 run to go-ahead 24-18. The Lions ended the second quarter with 12 straight points, led by six points from Prichard, and brought a 30-24 advantage into the break.
The visitors outscored the maroon and white 19-6 in the third frame and led 43-36 after the third stanza.
The Lions made it a three-point game, 47-44, after sophomore
Kathryn Gibson (five points) hit a triple with 3:44 left. But that was as close as the maroon and white would get as the Greyhounds held on to win 56-50.
Molloy returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 3, when it hosts ECC-foe LIU Post. Tip-off with the Pioneers is slated for 5:00 p.m.
