Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Nov. 21, 2017) – The Molloy women's basketball team was defeated by the Caldwell Cougars, 64-48, Tuesday evening at Quealy Gymnasium. Sophomore
Kathryn Gibson netted a team-high 16 points, and junior
McKayla Hernandez tallied 10 points. The Lions fell to 2-3 in the loss.
Caldwell (4-0) jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. The Lions scored the next four points on a pair of free throws from junior
Ihnacinse Grady (three points) and a layup from Hernandez to make it 7-6. The Cougars scored again and took a 9-6 lead at the end of the first frame.
Gibson opened the second quarter with eight consecutive points to put the home team ahead 14-9. Ahead 17-14, Hernandez made a three-pointer and freshman
Melody Prichard (eight points) hit a jumper to put Molloy up by eight, 22-14. Caldwell scored the final five points of the stanza to shrink the home team's lead to 22-19 at the half.
The team's traded the lead to begin the third quarter. Down 33-32, Hernandez made a layup and Gibson made a pair of foul shots to take a 36-33 advantage. Caldwell went back ahead, but Gibson hit a trey to make it 39-38 Lions. The Cougars hit a three before the quarter ended, which put the visitors ahead, 41-39, at the end of 30 minutes.
Caldwell outscored the maroon and white 23-9 to put away the game in the fourth quarter.
The Lions return to action Saturday, Nov. 25, when they head to play Bloomfield. Tip-off with the Bears is scheduled for noon.
