Balanced Scoring Attack Leads Women's Basketball Over Goldey-Beacom

Wilmington, Del. (Nov. 19, 2017) – Three players scored in double figures as the Molloy women's basketball team defeated the Goldey-Beacom Lightning, 58-51, Sunday afternoon. Gabriella Aspuru netted a team-high 15 points, and Marthe Guirand and Kathryn Gibson tallied 10 points apiece. The Lions improved to 2-2 with the win.

Goldey-Beacom jumped out to an early 8-4 lead. Molloy answered with a three-pointer from Aspuru to make it an 8-7 game. The home team made it a four-point game, but McKayla Hernandez (nine points) scored the Lions' final four points of the quarter to cut the Lightning's edge to 13-11 at the end of the first 10 minutes of play.

Down 21-14 in the beginning of the second quarter, the maroon and white went on a 12-0 run, which was led by six points from Guirand, to go up 26-21. Hernandez ended the quarter with a triple to put Molloy ahead 29-23 at the half.

Junior Ihnacinse Grady, who recorded seven points and seven assists, opened the third quarter with a score to increase the Lions' advantage to eight, 31-23.  Up 36-31, Molloy used a 9-0 rally, which was led by four points from Aspuru and three points from freshman Melody Prichard (five points), to gain a 14-point lead, 45-31, which was its largest lead of the contest. The maroon and white ended the third stanza ahead, 47-36.

The home team netted the first nine points of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to two, 47-45. The Lions, who shot 7-of-17 from downtown, responded with a trey by Aspuru. The Lightning cut the maroon and white's lead to 54-51 with 20 ticks left, but Gibson hit four consecutive free throws to secure the victory.

The Lions return to Quealy Gymnasium Tuesday, Nov. 21, to host Caldwell. Tip-off with the Cougars is slated for 5:00 p.m.
