Melody Prichard netted 15 points, and junior
McKayla Hernandez tallied 12 points leading the Molloy women's basketball team to a 55-52 victory over the Concordia Clippers in its home opener Wednesday evening at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improve to 1-2 with the win.
The maroon and white jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, led by four points from Prichard and three points from freshman
Gabriella Aspuru (five points). Freshman
Abigail Duvivier (six points)
hit a jumper to extend the Lions' lead to 11-5. Concordia (0-3) cut the home team's lead to 11-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Molloy went on a 9-2 run, led by four points from Prichard and three points from junior
Ihnacinse Grady, over the first 6:51 second quarter to increase its lead to 20-13. The Clippers tallied the final five points of the stanza to make it a 20-18 contest at the half.
The Lions brought its advantage to five, 25-20, on a jumper from Hernandez. The visitors scored the next six points to take a one-point lead, 26-25. Down 28-27, the maroon and white used five straight points to go back ahead, 32-28. Concordia jumped ahead, 34-33, with less than a minute left, but Hernandez made a layup with 25 ticks left to give Molloy a 35-34 edge at the end of the quarter.
With the score 37-36, the home team used a 7-0 rally, led by a triple from sophomore
Kathryn Gibson, to make it a 44-36 game. The Clippers made it 44-42 with 5:16 left, but the Lions held on for their first win of the season.
Molloy returns to action Sunday, Nov. 19 when it travels to Goldey-Beacom. Tip-off with the Lightning is slated for 12:00 p.m.
