Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2017) – The Molloy women's soccer team was defeated by the NYIT Bears, 2-1, in double overtime Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions move to 4-5-1 overall and 2-2 in ECC play. Freshman
Dana Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored for the maroon and white.
The Bears (6-4, 2-1 ECC) opened the scoring in the 11
th minute on a goal from Casey Luongo.
The Lions answered in the 22
nd minute. Junior
Dominique Capolongo (Islip, N.Y.) sent a ball to Poetzsch, who beat the keeper, to knot the score, 1-1. The teams ended the half with three shots apiece, and the match was tied at the break.
The Molloy offense, which was led by five shots from Poetzsch and three shots from junior
Amanda Milazzo (Setauket, N.Y.), registered nine shots in the second half, but couldn't break the tie. Following 90 minutes of play, the match went to overtime.
In the extra sessions, NYIT outshot the home team 5-1. The road team ended the contest with 59 seconds left in double overtime after Dina Simonian netted a free kick from the top of the box.
Freshman
Jackie Carty (East Islip, N.Y.) made four saves in the loss.
The Lions return to action Sunday, Oct.8, when they host American International. Kickoff with the Yellow Jackets is scheduled for noon.
