Poetzsch Scores Twice in Women's Soccer's Win over Bridgeport

Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2017) – Freshman Dana Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored on a penalty kick 4:17 into overtime leading the Molloy women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights Saturday afternoon on senior day at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improve to 6-6-2 overall and 4-3 in ECC play. Poetzsch scored multiple goals for the fourth time this season.

Bridgeport (7-7-2, 3-3-1 ECC) generated the majority of the chances in the first half outshooting the Lions 8-1. Molloy freshman keeper Jackie Carty (East Islip, N.Y.) made three of her eight saves in the opening stanza to keep the contest even at the break.

The Purple Knights, who outshot the Lions 16-9 in the match, opened the scoring in the 67th minute on a goal from Maegan Doyle. The maroon and white answered in the 76th minute, Poetzsch finished a lead pass from senior Katlyn Merino (Corona, N.Y.) to knot the score, 1-1. With the score tied, the teams exchanged chances but couldn't determine a winner  in 90 minutes.

In the extra session, Carty made a pair of stops before Poetzsch, who has a team-high 12 goals, ended the match on a penalty kick.

The Lions honored graduate student Kayla Roundsman (Islip Terrace, N.Y.), and seniors Samantha Mendes (Mineola, N.Y.), Merino, Erica Coppola (Plainview, N.Y.), Mariella Gotti (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Sam Bernieri (Massapequa, N.Y.), Felicia LaPera (West Babylon, N.Y.), and Kristen Cummings (Huntington Station, N.Y.) before the game as a part of senior day.
