Kyle Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.) who headed it into the top right corner of the net to give the Lions the 1-0 lead.
The pair of seniors would team up together once again in the 67
th minute, when Poetzsch sent the ball to Whyte who poked it just past the reach of Ciavaglia to increase Molloy's lead to 2-0. The Redhawks would respond shortly after, as Malcolm Shaw (Pickering, Ontario) was able to send the ball into the bottom corner of the net, beating sophomore goalie
Raul Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.). In the 83
rd minute, Bonilla, reigning ECC Defensive Player of the Week, picked up an assist as he punted a ball across the field for Poetzsch, who sent it right past Ciavaglia for the 3-1 lead. The Hicksville native secured the hat trick after displaying impressive footwork, dribbling into the 18-yard box and past the keeper in the 85
th minute of play.
Poetzsch and Whyte combined for 16 of the 27 shots for the Lions, each registering eight in the contest. The maroon and white had a shot advantage of 27-12, as well as having the better end of the 6-2 corner kick opportunities.
The Lions will return to action on Sunday (Oct. 2) as they welcome the Wildcats of Daemen College to Rockville Centre Sports Complex at 3:00 p.m.
