ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 25, 2016) - After a thrilling 13-12 win over Assumption College to open the 2016 campaign on Saturday (Feb. 20), the No. 19-ranked Molloy College men's lacrosse team will look to start off the season 2-0 for the third time in the last four years. To do so, the maroon and white must fend off the challenge of Wheeling Jesuit, in the Cardinals' first game of the young spring.
About The Lions- Molloy defeated Assumption thanks to junior midfielder
Jon Camposa (Syosset, N.Y.) scoring his fourth goal of the contest with 1:32 to play in regulation in providing the final margin for the Lions at Darcy Field on Feb. 20. Camposa had a team-high five points in the win, while senior attackman
Kevin Teresky (South Huntington, N.Y.) added two goals and two assists on eight shots in the victory.
- Freshman defender
Mike Durkin (Lake Grove, N.Y.) was named to the ECC Men's Lacrosse Week One Honor Roll after starring in his collegiate debut on defense for the Lions. Durkin had five ground ball pickups and three caused turnovers for the maroon and white on long pole defense. Sophomore goalie
Ryan Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.) made eight saves in the win.
- The victory was the first for
Bernard Dell'Aquila as Head Coach of the Molloy men's lacrosse team. It marked also the second consecutive season that the Lions dispatched of the Greyhounds, as the maroon and white were victors in a 9-5 battle up in Worcester last Saint Patrick's Day.
Concerning the Cardinals- Wheeling Jesuit won eight games last season and lost six, finishing with a 3-4 record in ECAC play in 2015.
- Sophomore attackman Dereck Downs (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) is the leading goalscorer returning for the Cardinals in the 2016 season. Downs had a team-high 37 goals scored in 14 games played, including a season-high six goals scored in an 18-8 win over Walsh University on Mar. 28. Fellow sophomore Matt Lee (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) also returns for Wheeling Jesuit after leading the team with 51 points (36 goals, 15 assists) last season.
- Wheeling Jesuit alum Landon DelPrince is the new head coach of the Cardinals men's lacrosse program. DelPrince was one of the program's best players, scoring 147 total points (87 goals and 60 assists) in his college career and helping Wheeling Jesuit reach as high as No. 11 in the 2014 NCAA Division II rankings.
Did You Know?- Wheeling Jesuit was once an associate member of the East Coast Conference for men's lacrosse. The Cardinals joined the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) in 2012 and play interleague bouts with other former ECC members Seton Hill, Mercyhurst and Lake Erie.
- Saturday's contest will be the first meeting between Molloy and Wheeling Jesuit since Apr. 14, 2012 when the Lions knocked off the Cardinals by a 12-6 score at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex.
