Offense Roars Back To Life for Men's Hoops in 86-79 Win at NYIT

Box Score

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Feb. 13, 2016) – A combined 49 points from juniors Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) and Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) lifted the Molloy College men's basketball team to an 86-79 win over  the Bears of New York Institute of Technology 86-79 Saturday in a road contest at Recreation Hall in Old Westbury, N.Y. The Lions improve to 7-16 overall, 5-10 in the ECC, while NYIT falls to 3-20 on the season and 2-14 in conference play.

The first half saw a lot of back and forth play from both sides, exchanging leads seven times throughout. Following the Bears largest lead of the game at 20-17, Curtis Jenkins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) went on an amazing 11-point personal run to put the Lions up 28-20 with 7:46 remaining in the half. Baskets from Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) and Brandon Williams (Baldwin, N.Y.) brought it to 34-21 with 6:26 left in the first half. A three-pointer and a lay-up from NYIT's Kieran Hamilton (Queens Village, N.Y.) and Darale Young (Boston, M.A.) respectively brought the Bears within eight, but it would not be enough to stop Morris and Marquardt. The pair scored 11 points in the final five minutes of the half. The two teams went to the locker room with Molloy up 47-35.

While the Lions built upon their lead for much of the second half, NYIT's 19 bench points kept the contest close. With 5:28 remaining, the Bears found themselves down 20 points. Young, Khalif Chaplin (Hempstead, N.Y.), and Alonzo Paulino Jr. (Bronx, N.Y.) chipped away at the lead, bringing NYIT to within eight with 1:24 left. Time ran out for the blue and gold, however, and two sets of foul shots from Williams locked up the 86-79 win for the Lions.

Marquardt and Morris posted 26 and 23 points respectively, while Jenkins rounded out the lead scoring with 15 points and 4 steals. The Lions shot 46.5% from the field, banking 33 of their 71 shots and notching an impressive 11 steals. Chaplin, Young, and Paulino scored 53 of NYIT's 79 points, tallying 26, 14, and 13 respectively.
