Three 20+ Point Performances Lead Lions to Victory Over Redhawks 102-89

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Dec. 10, 2016) – Seniors Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.), Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.), and Mike Guzzardi (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) all scored over 20 points in Molloy's win over Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday (Dec. 10). The Lions improve to 2-1 in East Coast Conference play and 5-6 on the season, while the Redhawks will continue to search for their first win, falling to 0-9 on the year (0-4 ECC).

Roberts Wesleyan opened to a 5-0 lead on a jumper by Zack Panebianco (Jamestown, N.Y.) and a three-pointer from Quinn Carey (Ponte Vedra, Fla.). A three-pointer from Nick Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.) put Molloy on the board shortly after. The teams battled back and forth in the opening minutes, with the maroon and white taking their first lead of the game with 12:08 left in the first half on a three-pointer from Marquardt. Each squad fired back and forth shots, trying to get ahead, but neither was able to gain much of an advantage until Guzzardi sunk a jump shot with 8:47 on the clock to send Molloy up 29-24. The Lions went off to a 13-8 run to go up 42-32 with three and a half minutes in left in the first half. Another three-pointer from Carey and a jumper from Isaiah Lewis (Churchville, N.Y.) brought the Redhawks within five with just under two minutes to play in the half. The final 90 seconds saw the teams go shot for shot, but Corbett was sent to the line with seven seconds on the clock. The freshman sunk both his attempts to send Molloy into the half up 50-41.

Lewis hit a jump shot to open the second half, but consecutive layups from Morris sent Molloy back up by double-digits. A 12 point run by Roberts tied the game at 56-56 with 15:24 on the clock. The score would be tied two more times in the following 60 seconds before a three-pointer from Manny Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y.) put the Redhawks up 63-60. Marquardt sunk two free throw attempts and put up a layup to put Molloy back in front with 12:50 left to play. Panebianco sunk both of his foul shot attempts to give Roberts Wesleyan the one-point advantage. Molloy went up by five on six points from Morris and Guzzardi. With 7:31 on the clock, a three-pointer from Marquardt sent the Lions up by 10 points. Lewis and Joseph cut the lead to seven points, but six points from Morris and Marquardt increased the deficit to 13. The Lions closed the game on a 12-9 run to earn the 102-89 win.

Morris led offensively with a game-high 27 points, going 12-of-18 from the floor, and added three steals. Marquardt added 24 points and five assists, while Guzzardi scored a career-high 23 points, shooting over 70% from the field, and put up two blocks. Morris and Guzzardi each pulled down a game-high seven boards. As a team, the maroon and white scored over half of their points in the paint and shot 60% from the field. The Lions also had another successful day from the charity stripe, sinking 13 of their 15 attempts.

Molloy remains on the road as they take on the Mavericks of Mercy College on Saturday (Dec. 17) at 3:00 p.m. on the campus of Westchester Community College.
