(Nov. 20, 2016) - Molloy's men's basketball team picked up their first win of the season following a highly competitive match with the previously undefeated Rams of Philadelphia University. The Lions (1-3) opened the game on a 7-3 run, with five points scored by senior
Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.). Philadelphia quickly cut the lead to only two off a layup from Eric Long (Bronx, N.Y.), but field goals from
Mike Guzzardi (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) and
Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) put the Lions back up by six. With 12:37 remaining in the opening frame, the maroon and white were ahead 16-9, but the Rams mounted an eight-point run to pull ahead by one point. Each team would continue to sink shots, and the score would be tied four times over the following five minutes. Buckets from Marquardt,
Curtis Jenkins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and
Josh Dennis (Valley Stream, N.Y.) would put the Lions up 36-30 with just under two minutes left in the first half. The two teams headed into the locker room with Molloy up 38-34.
The Rams opened the second frame, as Jordan DeCicco (Kingston, N.Y.) sunk a three-point shot. The sophomore would total nine points in the first four minutes of the half to bring the score to 45-42 in favor of the visitor. The teams would continue their back-and-forth battling, unable to maintain a lead of more than three points. The score would be tied three times in a three minute period. Another three-pointer from DeCicco gave the Rams their largest lead, up 68-60 with 5:15 left in the game. The Lions, however, cut the lead to only two points on made free throws from Marquardt and two field goals from Morris. With 2:02 left on the game clock, Marquardt sunk a deafening three-pointer to put the Lions ahead 71-70, a lead they would not relinquish. The Rams attempted to mount a comeback as Brendan Kilpatrick (Norristown, Pa.) made a layup to bring the game to within two with 62 seconds remaining, but five points from
Nick Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Jenkins sealed the 79-74 win for Molloy.
Four of the five starters for Molloy finished with double-digit point totals, including Marquardt, who led all scoring with 24 points, and Morris, who notched a double-double on 18 points and 10 rebounds. Morris and Jenkins also combined for six of the Lions' nine steals. The top scoring was rounded out by Guzzardi (13) and Corbett (12). For the Rams, Randolph finished with a team-high 21 points. Long mounted a double-double of his own, scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds. DeCicco also finished in double-digits and contributed three steals.
Molloy heads to Florida for contest with the Lions of Saint Leo University on Saturday(Nov. 26.) Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
