Women's Basketball Continues Rolling, Earns 62-50 Win Over Goldey-Beacom

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 19, 2016) - Following a deadlocked first half, the Molloy women's basketball team held the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College to just 15 second half points to earn the 62-50 win. With the victory, the Lions improve to 4-0 on the season while knocking the Lightning to 1-3.

In the first quarter, Molloy worked to an eight-point lead with just under five minutes remaining, but the Lightning quickly cut the lead to only two on three-pointers from Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and Lexi Bruno (Millville, N.J). A layup from Shantana Kanhoye (South Richmond Hill, N.Y.) and a shot from beyond the arc by Ihnacinse Grady (Amityville, N.Y.) brought the score to 16-9 in favor of Molloy with 3:28 seconds remaining in the opening frame. The first quarter would end with the teams tied at 17. In the second quarter, the see-saw act continued, with neither team able to establish a lead greater than two points at any point. The teams would head to the locker room with the score locked 35-35.

Britani Bryson (Hampton, Va.) opened the third quarter with a made layup to break the tie. Kanhoye responded by posting the game's next five points to take the score to 40-37 with 7:14 remaining in the frame. Bryson would be the only scorer in the quarter for the Lightning, totaling three field goals. Grady, Kathryn Gibson (Neponsit, N.Y.), Kamala Thompson (Selden, N.Y.) and Maya Joyner (North Babylon, N.Y.) would post points for the Lions, bringing the score to 48-41 heading into the final frame.

A three-pointer from Gibson extended Molloy's lead to ten points, by Bryson quickly posted a layup for the Lightning. Two made free throws by Gibson would make it 53-43 with 8:26 remaining in the contest. The Lightning continued to try to close the gap, bringing the score to 55-47 with just over five minutes left, but the maroon and white continued firing shots. Field goals from Grady and McKayla Hernandez (Windermere, Fla.) gave the Lions the 12 point lead, their largest of the game. Poch sunk a three for the visitors with 58 seconds remaining, but the Lions were simply too much to overcome. The final seconds ticked away and Molloy walked away with the 62-50 win.

Grady led all scorers, posting a career-high 20 point performance. The sophomore also nabbed two steals. Kanhoye also ended in double-digits with 11 points of her own. Thompson finished with ten boards and three steals for Molloy. The maroon and white will host East Coast Conference foe Saint Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday (Nov. 22) at 5:00 p.m.
