RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Oct. 6, 2016) - Off of a brilliant .313 hitting percentage, the Molloy College women's volleyball team completed a near-perfect performance in sweeping Felician University in three sets on Thursday (Oct. 6). Set scores from Rutherford favored the Lions by a count of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-18 as Molloy won its second straight match this week and fourth match of the season. Felician, meanwhile, falls to 0-15 now in the 2016 campaign.
Right-side hitter
Danielle Williams (Alba, Texas) and freshman middle blocker
Devon Hagerstrom (Bethpage, N.Y.) each contributed 14 kills on staggering attacking percentages; Williams hit .345 in the three-set sweep while Hagerstrom posted a .571 clip on the attack. The numbers from the Bethpage rookie were second to that of fellow first-year player
Hailey Wehr (Wading River, N.Y.), whose seven kills came on 12 attempts without error for a .583 percentage. Meanwhile,
Shannon Wren (Lynbrook, N.Y.) continued to provide a stellar option with eight kills as she now has a team-high 181 kills for the season.
The successful attacks came from an impressive assist total by
Sophia Smith (Georgetown, Texas), who continued her assault on the record books Thursday evening. Smith's 38 assists pushed her to a mark of 527 for the season---which is already the eighth-most assists by a Lion in a single year of volleyball action. The Lions were also successful in lighting up the Golden Falcons for ten service aces, the first double-digit ace match for the maroon and white in 2016. Meanwhile, junior
Dakota O'Neill (Long Beach, N.Y.) led the way in the back row with 12 digs and defensive specialists
Meaghan Carr (Mineola, N.Y.) and
Jessica Fischetti (Seaford, N.Y.) combined for 13 digs between the two players.
The Molloy College volleyball team will welcome in both NYIT and Saint Rose to Quealy Gymnasium on Saturday (Oct. 8) for a tri-match that will begin at 11 a.m. The Lions will also celebrate Camper Appreciation Day with a one-hour clinic beginning at 9 a.m.
