Poetzsch's Record-Setting Marker Sets Men's Soccer to 4-1 Triumph Tuesday

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 4, 2016) – Senior Kyle Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.) made history in the 15th minute of Tuesday's (Oct. 4) contest with Assumption College when he scored his 22nd career goal to become the all-time leading goal scorer in Molloy College history. The East Coast Conference Preseason Player of the Year would go on to score twice more in the 4-1 victory against the Greyhounds.

Once again, the Molloy (6-2) offense was explosive, scoring on the very first shot 20 seconds into the game. Rounding out his seven-point night, Poetzsch sent a cross to the waiting Anthony Cestaro (Massapequa, N.Y.), who fired it above goalkeeper Brian Murray (Camas, Wash.) for his first collegiate goal. The Lions would control the pace for the majority of the game, continually keeping Assumption (5-5) in their own zone. Any scoring opportunities for the Greyhounds were kept at bay by a strong defensive effort by the maroon and white.

In the 53rd minute, Poetzsch showed impressive footwork as he dribbled past Assumption's defenders before firing a shot into the far side corner of the net for his second goal of the night. The hat trick would be completed in the 62nd minute of action, as the Hicksville native chipped the ball into the back of the net off a cross from Adam Carnwath (Fleet, England). The Greyhounds were able to score in the 64th minute when senior Derek Buckley (Medway, Mass.) beat sophomore goalie Raul Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.) on a shot into the right-hand corner of the net.

Bonilla, the reigning and two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week made three saves in the effort. Poetzsch totaled a team-high six shots, while Cestaro and Mosiah Whyte (Coram, N.Y.) each fired three. The Lions maintained a 15-10 shot advantage on the night, and also had a 6-4 edge on corner kicks.

The maroon and white begin a three-game road trip on Saturday (Oct. 8) as they head to Sparkill, N.Y. for a contest with St. Thomas Aquinas College at 2:00 p.m.
